PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired twice late to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
